This study explores the intersection of AI technologies and African cultural heritage, specifically
focusing on the preservation of religious symbols and practices. The study aims to achieve three
objectives: examining AI's role in enhancing the digital preservation and recognition of African
religious symbols, investigating AI-driven communication tools in supporting cultural integrity
and addressing ethical concerns, and analyzing how AI integration in sectors like tourism,
education, and healthcare can promote sustainable development in rural African communities.
The research was anchored on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory and adopted a mixed-methods
approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through semi-
structured interviews, focus group discussions, and observations, with participants from diverse
religious and cultural backgrounds across Nigeria. The findings revealed widespread support for
AI's role in digitizing and preserving sacred texts and rituals but highlighted concerns regarding
the commercialization and misinterpretation of cultural practices. The study emphasizes the need
for culturally sensitive AI integration to preserve African cultural integrity while fostering
sustainable development. In conclusion, the study recommends expanding AI tools in cultural preservation, establishing ethical guidelines to prevent cultural misrepresentation, and ensuring
community involvement in the AI integration process to maintain authenticity and respect for
African spiritual practices.
